Anita Ramsey Trial Strategies Clinic

Well, my goals for 2024 are set, and we are trying for the 100 Day Dog Training Challenge. Not all days will be documented on here. This is Day 2, as Fiddle and I worked Obedience at Tractor Supply on January 5th!

Well, the first week of the New Year was marred with Monsoon like rains, but Mazikeen and Fiddle saddled up anyways.

I have been working very hard on working foundations, but haven’t really put much thought into how to trial. My regular instructor, Susan, has been trying to help me, but, my friend Anita Ramsey came to the Isle of Calais, in Smithfield VA, and I took my two trialing dogs to start to learn strategies to help.

I found some foundational holes in trialing. For Mazikeen, we had to practice bringing stock to the cone as an independent skill, and she struggled with the y and z chute (continued movement is key. We also worked holds at the gate.

Fiddle did a better job taking the sheep from the cone to y chute, but I have to watch the stock carefully for their trajectory as they missed the chute. We lost the sheep after the cross drive panels to the draw. When we work for the gate, we need to get a short line to actually make sure she stays in place while the doors open and shut, as the stock movement tried to pull her in.

Overall, it was a very wonderful day! If not wet as all getout.
